The rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other captives of
the Farc has revealed the extent to which the Colombian military and security
forces have become familiar with the inner workings of the guerrilla
organisation. This, and the 1 March raid on Raúl Reyes's camp inside Ecuador,
have been the most spectacular signs of the improvement of Colombian
intelligence about the Farc, but they have not been the only ones. The commander
of Colombia's military forces, General Freddy Padilla, has been proclaiming that
this is not 'the beginning of the end' for the Farc, but actually the
prelude to 'the end of the end'.
